All Ireland Semi defeat to Clogher

All Ireland Semi defeat to Clogher

Our dream of returning to Croke Park was ended by Clogher Eire Og on a scoreline of 2.13 to 0.09 in a cold & frosty Pairc Sean Mac Diarmaida, Carrick-on-Shannon. The match was due to start at 12.30 pm, but was moved back to 1.00 pm due to hard frost on the pitch.

By half-time, we were down by 6 points, and thanks to a great save by Jamie McNicholas, we eagerly looked forward to the second half. Jamie was to save us again in the 2nd half when he denied their No. 11, Ciaran Bogue, a clear goal chance. Indeed, the Clogher number 11 had a fine game, and he ended up scoring 2.04 from play. We had our own goal chance in the first half when Oisin Mulderrig got through on goal but his shot was saved by the Clogher keeper.

In the first half, we contested every ball, and in the early stages, we were more than a match for Clogher.  They started with two wides. Then their number 11 was put through on goal, but Jamie McNicholas pulled off a great save, putting the ball out for a 45. Clogher’s keeper, Rory McElroy, converted the 45, but this point was cancelled out by a point from Oisin Mulderrig. Clogher’s Ryan McCaughey and Tommy Keegan exchanged points before Clogher went 2 points ahead with points by Ryan McCaughey and Rory McElroy.

Tomas Keegan scored his second point, reducing Clogher’s’ lead to 1 point, but their lead was restored with a point by Ciaran Bogue. We had a golden chance for a goal when Aiden Cosgrove’s quick free kick picked out Oisin Mulderrig, only for Oisin’s shot to be saved by the Clogher keeper. A minute later, Ciaran Bogue made up for his missed chance earlier by netting his first goal, putting the ball low into the bottom corner out of the reach of Jamie McNicholas. Clogher added two further points through Bogue and Vincent Lowry to one from Tomas Keegan, and at half-time, Clogher led on a scoreline of 1.07 to 0.04.

We started the second half with a quick point from Conor Mallee, but Clogher replied with two more points by Ryan McCaughey and Ciaran Bogue, stretching their lead to 7 points. In the 41st minute, Paul Kelly scored a huge 2-pointer, but his game was cut short minutes later when he sustained a concussion while blocking Ciaran Bogues’ shot for his fourth point of the afternoon.

Any faint hopes we had of a comeback were ended with ten minutes of normal time remaining when Ryan McCaughey played in Ciaran Bogue for his second goal of the afternoon. This ended the game as a contest, and Clogher tagged three late points, ensuring they qualified to meet Munster champions, Ballymacelligott, in the All-Ireland Junior final.

Connacht Champions 2025

Kiltimagh eased to their second-ever Connacht club junior football championship title after an eight-point win over Aughavas this afternoon in Carrick-on-Shannon.

The Leitrim champions were erratic with their shooting early doors, and Kiltimagh punished them with unerring accuracy with six points without reply, including a fabulous two-pointer by midfielder Paul Kelly and a sweetly struck ’45 by goalkeeper Jamie McNicholas.

Even at this stage, it was all too easy for Kiltimagh, but the Leitrim side would give their supporters something to cheer about when Adrian Shortt converted their first score with a two-point free on 19 minutes.

They would score only one more point in the half however, also coming from a Shortt free, as further points by Conor Mallee, Paul Kelly, Fionan Burke and Thomas Keegan saw the Blues lead 0-11 to 0-3 at half-time.

Darren Shortt and Thomas Keegan traded frees early in the second half, and Keegan followed it up with a point from play to extend the gap to nine three minutes into the second half. Oisin Mulderrig almost found the net on the rebound from Liam Smyth’s initial shot, but an Aughavas defender cleared away.

Joey McBrien fired over a magnificent two-pointer from play, but Aughavas would score only two points in the final quarter. They looked to find the goal to set up a grandstand finish, but Jamie McNicholas was untroubled and points from Eoghan Lavin, Oisin Mulderrig and Fionan Burke ensured the east Mayo side won their first provincial title since 2009.

Full match report to follow.

Epic Connacht semi-final win

Epic Connacht semi-final win

What a day, what a game, extra time, penalties, and a nail-biting sudden-death penalty shoot-out to decide whether Kiltimagh or St Croans progressed to the Connacht final to meet Leitrim champions, Aughavas, on the 29th of November. Luck was with us, and our goalkeeper, Jamie McNicholas, saved not one but two penalties, ensuring a great day for our club.

St Croans started brightly and got the first point from a free. However, we responded with a brilliant goal by Paul Kelly after a great interchange of play with Jack Niland and Oisin Mulderrig. Three minutes later, we had another goal chance but Conor Mallee’s effort was well saved by their keeper. Thomas Keegan followed up with a shot for a point, only for it to hit the post, but finally our efforts were rewarded with Brian Gallagher scoring a good point. Croans replied with a point, only for Thomas Keegan to cancel it out with his first point. Then Croans gifted Fionan Burke a point from a free by incurring their first breach (failure to keep three players in the our half). This did not deter Croans and after they scored another point, they were unlucky not to have scored a goal from an instinctive flick-on from an attempted point, only to be denied by Jamie in our goal.

At this stage, we were on top all over the field and added two more points to the scoreboard courtesy of  Fionan Burke and Paul Kelly, to move five points clear. However, Croans responded and started to build momentum, scoring two more points to cut our lead back to three. Then they shot themselves in the foot again, gifting Fionan Burke another point from a free as a result of their second breach. This made the score 1.06 to 0.05 in favour of us.

Despite this, Croans kept plugging away, and by the end of the third quarter, they had reduced our lead to just one point. We didn’t panic and battled on, but scores wouldn’t come. We hit six wides in the process before Jamie McNicholas scored a brilliant two-pointer to restore our lead to three points. We followed this up with our second goal by Fionan Burke, following a brilliant run by Liam Smyth. Croans countered this goal by one of their own, with one of their players deflecting a shot past Jamie in our goal. We suffered another setback in the 57th minute and were reduced to 14 players when Kevin Mulderrig was shown a black card for a foul on a Croans player. Croans scored a further point, reducing our lead to one point, and at the end of normal playing time, they scored another point from a free, levelling the scores and forcing the game into extra time.

In the first period of extra time, their goalkeeper saved from Liam Smyth and Eoghan Lavin, and on three occasions they went ahead from pointed frees, only for them to be cancelled out by two points from Oisin Mulderrig and Thomas Keegan. At the end of extra time, the scores were level 2.11 to 1.14, and for the first time in our history, we were going to have to rely on penalties to win the game.

Both goalkeepers made crucial saves, and after the five mandatory penalties were taken by both teams, the scores were deadlocked, and we went to sudden-death. Leading by one and with Croans’ turn to take their penalty, all the pressure was on them to score. But “cometh the hour, cometh the man” and up stepped Jamie McNicholas with a brilliant save to put us through to the delight of the players, management, and supporters.

Connacht Champions 2025

County Junior Champions 2025

Our stay in junior football has been a brief one as we comfortably saw off Easter Gaels in the county junior final on a scoreline of 1.17 to 0.07, and return to Intermediate football after only one year. Whilst not played in great conditions, the game never truly ignited for either side until the last quarter. But it was the impact from our bench that made the difference. The introduction of Aiden Cosgrove (he had travelled from the U.S.A. to play in this game) in the 49th minute, ultimately ended Easter Gaels resistance. After scoring a point in the 53rd minute, he was then teed up by fellow substitute Liam Smyth for a great goal that all but sealed our victory.

We had heroes all over the pitch. Jack Niland and captain Liam Kelly were superb in defence, Paul Kelly was dominant in midfield, wing forward Brian (Chuckie) Gallagher (man-of-the-match) turned Eastern Gaels over time after time and corner forwards Thomas Keegan and Fionnan Burke impressed in attack.

Easter Gaels were first to score in the fourth minute but they could have had a goal in the first minute had Eastern Gaels corner forward Jack Maddens goalward shot come back off the post. Our first attempts at scoring wasn’t much better as our first two attempts at scoring resulted in two wide. Thomas Keegan scored our first point on the sixth minute but even though we were dominating possession and the Gaels kickout, we our scoring count was one point from five scoring attempt.

Easter Gaels went two points ahead but we brought the score back level with points from Paul Kelly and Conor Malle. The Gaels scored a point from a free putting them ahead again by one point but a brilliant two pointer from Fionnan Burke put us ahead for the first time in the game. We added two more points from Jack Niland and Jordan Henry and at this stage we were dominant all over the field and in control. The Gaels has two attempts at points from free before half time but both tailed off wide as we went in at half time leading 0.07 to 0.04.

In the first minute of the second half, Conor Malle extended our lead to four points but the Gaels scored in the 35th and 36th minutes to reduce our lead to one point. They also created two chances for goals but our goalkeeper Jamie McNicholas, who had a fine game, read both situations perfectly and cleared away the danger.

Thomas Keegan scored another point but this was cancelled our by Eastern Gaels immediately. Keegan scored again, his third point, from a free to extend our lead but the Gaels cancelled this our with another point of their own. Play was back and forth but then up stepped Paul Kelly in the 47th minute with a monster two-pointer to give us a double score lead. At this stage, our superior physicality ensured we were dominant all over the field and in the 53rd minute, substitute Aiden Cosgrove scored his first point only to follow it up by a beauty into the net, after being played in by substitute Liam Smyth.

The final whistle went and the Pete McDonnell Cup, last won by the club in 2009, was on its way back to Kiltimagh. It was a fitting finale to a great month following the opening of our new playing area and stand at our re-developed Gilmartin G.A.A. park. Whilst our journey may have ended in Mayo, we now begin a new journey  entering the All Ireland Junior series at the Connacht where we await the winners of St Croans (Roscommon) V Cloonacool (Sligo) to be played on the 15th or 16th of November.

Junior team qualify for County final

Junior team qualify for County final

Our junior team beat Ardagh in a pulsating county semi-final on a scoreline of 1.18 to 2.13. At half time, we were down by 4 points but observers at the game would say we should have been down by far more.

Ardagh were looking to secure their first county final appearance and started with great purpose, cutting our defence wide open on many occassions. They led 1.8 to 0.7 at half time but should have had the game wrapped up by then and only had themselves to blame due to wasteful kicking. They also found our goalkeeper Jamie McNicholas in excellent form, making two outstanding point blank saves, denying Ardagh the nescessary scores to put the game out of our reach. He also contributed 6 points (3 x 2 pointes) from frees to our scoreline.

In the second half, Liam Smyth was introduced to midfield and his efforts spurred on the rest of the team. We attacked with purpose and the scores started coming. Conor Mallee finished off a fine move with a goal and suddenly we were back in the game just a point behind. Thomas Keegan scored and we were level and we then went ahead with a fine point by Eoghan Lavin. However, former Mayo player, James Carr was having a fine game and he finished off a move with a goal to restore Ardagh’s advantage to 3 points.

Jamie McNicholas started our comeback with another 2 pointer and these were followed up by 1 pointers from Conor Mallee, Jack Niland and Fionnan Burke. However despite these scores, Ardagh matched us all the way and after 55 minutes the scores were level at 2.12 to 1.15.

Extra time looked likely but up stepped Jack Niland with another fine point followed by another from Fionnan Burke. But there was drama right at the end with James Carr finishing off a fine move, scoring a goal which would have won the game for Ardagh only for it to be cancelled out by the referee for an Ardagh breach in defence.
