St Aidens N.S. win Cumann na mBunscoil
Jun 6, 2009, 10:59 pm
A powerful start from the Kiltimagh side helped them on their way to a comfortable win over 2008 Champions, Quay NS, Ballina. Points from Dylan Roache and Fergus McCormack were followed by a goal from Cillian Finn, punched to the net, and these scores seemed to knock the steam out of the Ballina side. They did manage their only point of the half at that stage but this was quickly erased by another Roache point. Jason Forkan followed that with a beautiful point and then Cillian Finn finished the half's scoring with another 1-2. However, it wasn't just in the scoring department that St Aiden's were on top. Any ball that came down the middle was hoovered up by Calum Turtill who had the game of his young life and he frustrated all players put on him by beating each one of them to the ball on every occasion. Shane Ruane was Mr. Dependable in goal and this gave great confidence to the defence with Barrett, Sean Walsh and Paul O' Brien sound in front of him. There was a swirling wind and it was difficult to say what team it may have been assisting. It certainly didn't assist the Ballina boys in the second half. The teams again traded points after the break, Kiltimagh's point again coming from Roache. However, Jack Carroll snuffed out a number of attacks and Rory Grogan featured strongly. Then 2 goals from McCormack and a point from Robbie Gill killed off the game as a contest. The first of McCormack's goals came from a great catch and lay off from Martin Byrne and the second from a ball won by Dean Forkan on the 40 and passed inside to Fergus. The teams again exchanged points in the closing stages with Patrick McDonnell striking over after a wonderful move. Ciaran Mulderrig, Cian Charlton and Niall Clendon came on in the finishing stages to help close out the game for Kiltimagh. Congratulations to St Aiden's on this wonderful win and great credit is due to Brendan Donnellan and his assistant, Tom Byrne, for the way they coached and prepared this team.
